Two noted experts will discuss the current state of nuclear energy

Join us for an insightful discussion about nuclear energy-the current regulatory landscape, economic reality, impact of Fukushima, the Iranian deal, current technology, and much more!  Our two speakers, Ernie Harkness and Kevin Carrabine, have experienced the nuclear industry from every angle-design, build, operate, manage, and regulate-and will offer their views about the current state of the business. 

Mr. Harkness shall discuss the size and performance of the US and International fleet of nuclear plants. The benefits of Nuclear Power and the current challenges the industry face shall be the focus of the discussion. This shall include current impacts to operation from financial challenges, regulatory challenges, and equipment performance. The Q&A session shall be provided at the end to answer any additional questions.

Mr. Carrabine, with 30-yrs experience in the nuclear energy business, will discuss the concept of a Nuclear Safety Culture and its importance to safely operating nuclear power plants.  In addition, Mr. Carrabine will present how the Exelon Nuclear fleet of units operates day-to-day on the foundation of its management model, highlighting performance standards and operational results.  Finally, he will discuss how Exelon Nuclear Partners is helping existing operators and new build projects through the adoption & implementation of this management model.

Speaker Bios:

Ernest Harkness - Consultant 

Mr. Harkness has worked in the nuclear industry for over 30 years.  Currently he provides consulting services for power generation, with a proven record providing independent oversight, review, and improvement initiatives at United States and International Facilities for the Utility Senior Executive Team. Mr. Harkness’s other experiences include power station operations, plant management and regulatory compliance.  Mr. Harkness holds his degree from Drexel University.  He is a registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut and holds licenses with the U.S. NRC Senior Reactor Operator (Hope Creek Generating Station), National Board Commission for Inspection of Boiler and Pressure Vessels, and Stationary Engineer License (N.J. Red Seal). 

Kevin Carrabine, PE, PMP - Business Development, Exelon Nuclear Partners

Kevin Carrabine has worked in the nuclear industry for over 30 years with Exelon Generation, LLC. In his current role, he is responsible to develop new business opportunities for Exelon Nuclear Partners LLC (ENP), abusiness unit that can deliver a variety of services to clients interested in new nuclear development or improving existing nuclear program performance. 

Kevin’s other experiences include responsibilities in Construction, Engineering, Project Management, Outage Management and Maintenance. His experience also includes time at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA as an industry Senior Evaluator.

Kevin holds degrees from Brown University (Civil Engineering) and Saint Joseph’s University (Masters in Business Administration). He graduated from the Advanced Management Program at the Fuqua School of Business (Duke University), is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, received a management reactor operator certification and has earned his Project Management Professional (PMP) credential from the Project Management Institute (PMI).
