Philadelphia Zoo Presentation of Sustainability Campaign - Footprints

Philadelphia Zoo has spent more than 150 years building strong programs in education and wildlife conservation aimed at accomplishing our mission:  “By connecting people with wildlife, the Philadelphia Zoo creates joyful discovery and inspires action for animals and habitats.”  In 2012, the “Footprints” program was unveiled that established the Zoo’s inaugural sustainability program with five key focus areas:  1. continuous energy efficiency, 2. transparent inventory & established reduction targets of greenhouse gas emissions, 3. conservation & reuse of water, 4. thoughtful stormwater management, 5. Reduction of non-hazardous solid waste to zero-waste to landfill disposal.

The Philadelphia Zoo is proud to present the successes achieved towards the five (5) target reduction goals and lessons learned through the inaugural Footprint’s campaign.  Join us to hear about the exciting changes at the Philadelphia Zoo from our panel of speakers:

Kim Lengel, Vice President of Conservation and Education

Rick Waligora, Vice President of Facilities

Emily Katzin, Sustainability Manager

Following the panel presentation, join us for a tour of KidZooU Education Center.  The Hamilton Family Children’s Zoo & Faris Family Education Center is an award-winning wildlife academy that earned prestigious LEED Gold certification in December 2013 and represents the goals of Footprints campaign.

Meeting registration includes admission to the Zoo.  Use of public transportation is highly recommended.  Parking vouchers will be available for those who choose to drive and park at zoo facilities.

KidsZooU additional highlights:

KidZooU is a LEED Gold certified project, and utilizes elements such as geothermal wells for heating and cooling; daylighting; rain water collection for use as gray water to flush the public toilets; rain gardens and vegetated roofs to reduce water runoff into storm drains; building reuse (renovation of the former pachyderm exhibit); and recycled and salvage building materials.
